How it works

The National Pension System (NPS) is a market-linked retirement scheme regulated by PFRDA. Your monthly contributions are invested in a mix of equity, corporate bonds and government securities until age 60, growing much like a long-running SIP.

At 60: 60% lump sum (tax-free) + 40% buys an annuity → monthly pension

This calculator grows your contributions at the return you choose. At 60, it splits the corpus the standard way: up to 60% can be withdrawn as a lump sum (tax-free), and at least 40% must buy an annuity from an empanelled provider, which pays the monthly pension shown. The pension estimate simply applies your chosen annuity rate to that 40% portion, so it moves directly with annuity rates prevailing at retirement.

NPS suits very long-horizon retirement saving, helped by low fund costs and an additional ₹50,000 tax deduction under Section 80CCD(1B) in the old regime. Its lock-in till 60 is strict, so most investors pair NPS with flexible mutual fund SIPs.

Frequently asked questions

Up to 60% of the corpus can be withdrawn as a lump sum at age 60, and it is tax-free. At least 40% must be used to buy an annuity, whose pension is taxed as income.
Returns are market-linked and vary by asset class and pension fund manager. Equity-heavy NPS options have delivered roughly 9–11% annually over long periods historically, but nothing is guaranteed.
Premature exit is allowed after 5 years only for specified purposes and with conditions: only 20% can be taken as lump sum and 80% must buy an annuity (for smaller corpuses, full withdrawal rules differ). NPS is designed to stay locked till 60.
