How it works

The Public Provident Fund (PPF) is a government-backed, long-term savings scheme. You deposit between ₹500 and ₹1,50,000 per financial year, interest is compounded annually, and both the interest and the maturity amount are tax-free. The account runs for 15 years and can be extended in blocks of 5 years.

Each year: Balance = (Opening balance + Deposit) × (1 + r)

This calculator assumes your yearly deposit is made at the start of the financial year, so it earns interest for the full year — depositing before 5 April maximises interest in the real account too, since PPF interest is calculated on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of each month. The interest rate is revised by the Government every quarter, so treat the result as an estimate at today's rate.

PPF suits the debt portion of a long-term plan: capital safety, tax-free returns and forced discipline. Its 15-year lock-in and modest rate mean growth-focused goals usually pair it with equity mutual funds.
